Water Year

A water year (also called a hydrologic year) refers to the precipitation that falls as rain and snow over a 12-month period.  My water year goes from October 1 to September 30.  To get accurate snow water equivalent (SWE) measurements, snow cores are taken and then either melted or weighed to determine the equivalent amount of rain.

Water year 2017 is the first year I’ve participated in with the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail, and Snow (CoCoRHS) Network.
